Prataccio

Via Mammianese, 51024 Prataccio, Toscana Italia | (Allarga la mappa)

Prataccio owes its name to the presence, in ancient times, of fields unsuitable for cultivation. Anyway, with the passage of time and the commitment of its inhabitants, today, there is nothing left of that inhospitable and wild past. Prataccio, over the years, managed to transform, to erase its past and to become a welcoming and delightful holiday destination.
The village consists of many hamlets – Aiale, Capanne and Africo – each with its characteristics and its peculiarities: Africo, surely the oldest (the ancient mule track that led to Prunetta passes from there); Capanne, called like that because the first houses were covered with straw; and Aiale, the most residential area of the country.
In the past, the inhabitants of Prataccio were mostly shepherds, but over time they have undertaken many other activities, such as the production and trade of wood and coal, stone working, the manufacture of terracotta bricks and also the production ice thanks to the waters of the Rio Buio. Evidence of some of these activities can still be found; this is the case, for instance, of the villages of Mulino di Sotto and Mulino di Sopra.
For those who love sports and being outdoors, the ideal place is the Faggetta Park, located in the forest that runs along the state road. Inside you can find a bowling alley, a multipurpose field for football, tennis, and volleyball, a children’s playground, and a table tennis. In addition to this, there is a picnic area equipped with a barbecue for those who want to eat comfortably in the quiet and serenity. From Prataccio you can easily reach the sources of the river Reno and the Lari Cross: just follow the path that leads to Prunetta and, from there, follow the itinerary (insert Prunetta Le Lari itinerary). For those who prefer less demanding and more relaxing walks the villages of Capanne di Sopra and Capanne di Sotto offer pleasant and interesting excursions.
