Crespole

Crespole, Toscana Italia | (Allarga la mappa)

Crespole is a delightful medieval village that has watched over the Val di Forfora for centuries. The first documented information about the village dates back to 1244 and, since then, it has always played a fundamental role in the protection of the valley.
its loyalty to Pistoia, as it was indeed the only village that never rebelled against the domination of the city, made it a stronghold on the Pistoia mountains first during the war between the Guelphs and Ghibellines and then in the war with Lucca. Spino da Trivulzio dei Panciatichi also stayed here. In 1290, he attacked the rival village Lanciole, stole the opposing flags, and then exhibited them in triumph on the gates of Crespole. Later, it became the residence of many noble families whose coats of arms are still visible on the houses of the village as a further evidence of its glorious past.
There are also numerous crosses and tabernacles that can be admired walking around the village. The most important is certainly the one dedicated to Our Lady of the Snow which, according to legend, was erected to celebrate a copious snowfall in the month of August. The height of the tabernacle is believed to be equal to that of the snow fallen almost miraculously. The church of the village is also very old. It is characterized by its entrance, protected by a small porch, which is accessed by climbing two stone stairs. Next to this church there is the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, also called Our Lady of the Rosary, an eighteenth-century building that has recently been restored and in which you can see a valuable XVI century painting representing the Virgin of the Rosary.
Crespole has also preserved its original city walls in good condition, maintaining its medieval connotation and making the experience of walking through its streets even more evocative.
